URBAN

Sailing with about 160 others on the ship “George,” from BREMEN, GERMANY; arriving in NEW YORK CITY, on May 13, 1852. She must have left on one of the earliest ships in the spring, around April 1st. This was a distinct change from the two previous STEMPEL groups, who arrived in the USA in November. It may have been caused hardships on earlier trips and by a realization that an early spring arrival would give time to get established before winter arrived.

1)      Pauline URBAN, 17 (perhaps a nanny to the children; may have been going to her Aunt Wilhelmine, who immigrated in the 2nd wave of STEMPELS in 1848)

Pauline URBAN, was born Johanne Pauline URBAN, 10 Aug 1835, the daughter of Johann Christian URBAN and Elizabeth KOKRICK, of DRACHHAUSEN. This family had several girls with the 1st name of Johanne, followed by a second name, so they likely were known by their 2nd names.

Pauline was traveling with the Robert STEMPEL family, wave 3 of the STEMPEL immigration.  She would certainly be young to travel alone, and the STEMPEL’S had 4 young children, so she likely was acting as their Nanny.

They were likely all headed for FORT MADISON, IOWA  where Pauline likely went to live with Wilhelmine URBAN, who previously immigrated with the 2nd STEMPEL wave in 1848. Wilhelmine was likely her cousin or aunt (the connection would be made prior to the first Drachhausen church books).

Wilhelmine URBAN had immigrated with the 2nd wave of STEMPEL’S in 1848, was also likely a Nanny or family helper to the STEMPEL’S and had married non Wend, Ludwig Huebotter, in 1850, in St John’s Church, Fort Madison

Pauline URBAN is found as a godparent in the christening record of fellow Wend, Heinrich Wilhem GULLICK, on 8 Feb 1855, at St John’s church in Fort Madison.
