KULLOWATZ

1)    Chris KULLOWATZ, 11, stepson of Christian MARKUSCH

Christian KULLOWATZ was the illegitimate son of Elisabeth “Liese” MELKOW also known as the daughter of Christian MELKOW, who has taken the name of KULLOWATZ, born 23 Apr 1971, in DRACHHAUSSEN. This most likely means that her father, Christian MELKOW has purchased or inherited a farm previously owned by KULLOWATZ;   but a stipulation in the deed requires that he change his name to KULLOWATZ.

Six years later his mother married Christian MARKUSCH, 30 Apr 1877, in DRACHHAUSEN. They had 2 more children named Fred and Mary MARKUSCH, 7 and 10 years younger than Christian KULLOWATZ. The family of 5 traveled to the USA, where they had 2 more children.

Christian, known as “Chris” KULLOWATZ, may not have been fully accepted by his stepfather, Christian MARKUSCH. “Chris” never changed his name, and on 22 Oct 1893, he was taking communion with the MUSCHICK family in St Paul’s Lutheran church in STATE CENTER in, while the rest of his family attended St. John’s (French Grove) in the country, nearer the ZEARING farm.

He lived with the MARKUSCH FAMILY FOR 9 years, until he was 20 and Moved to MOON LAKE, WI. He married Christina Bruess in OSCEOLA, WI, who died in 1901. Christina bore twins Freda and Fred. Fred grew up to have twins also.  Chris then remarried Anna Hass Schmidt in 1902 and they had 3 children together, Lydia, Martha and Otto.  They continued to farm, until he retired in 1924,when they moved to CLAYTON, WI.  They moved to LE CENTER, MN where they lived with their daughter, till their deaths.
