JANKE

This family, discovered in the birth records of St. John’s United Church of Christ in Fort Madison, are presumed to be Wendisch.

The birth of twins Helen Wilhemina and Harry Robert JANKE is on 25 Apr 1897, with their christening on 16 may 1898. Their parents are Wilhelm JANKE and Minna Maibaum, Horkport, Lee County, Iowa. The twins alone, are an indicator that this family might be Wendish from around Drachhausen

This birth exactly follows Martin Gottfried JURTH in the church birth book, whose parents are confirmed Wends from DRACHHAUSEN; and whose godparent, Maria NUEMANN, is also from Drachhausen

Though the JANKE family is not from Drachhausen, the name is found in other Wendish villages, in particular LUBBENAU.

This name is found also in 55 news articles and other sources in SHEYBOYGAN, WI and census and marriage records of WATERLOO, ONTARIO, CANADA.

Ship records also indicate Wilhelm JANKES from Prussia that could be this person
