HALBASCH

Emmigration documents filed in COTTBUS, BRANDENBURG, PRUSSIA show this family’s plan to leave DREHNOW, in 1856. DREHNOW is a tiny village, about 5 miles straight east of DRACHHAUSEN. They are believed to be relatives of the DRACHHAUSEN HALBASCH family, which was fairly large.

They travel from Hamburg to New York, arriving September 22, 1856, on the Sailing ship “Louis Napoleon,” indexed as “Halbusch.” There are other Wends on this ship.

1.      Martin HALBASCH Sr., 50, “kossath” (cottager -owner of a small home on a 5 acre plot of land, born in DREHNOW.

2.      Wife, Anna SCHENATZK, 42, born about 1814.

Martin had 9 Children, 3 of the boys (Matthes, Johann, and Johann)  died in infancy, before their immigration. Martin had previously been married to Anna LAURISCHKE, who died in 1853. Christiane was the first child by his second wife, Anna SCHENATZK, also of DREHNOW.

3.      Martin PhillipHALBASCH Jr., 18, b 23 Sep 1838, Drehnow, marries Dorothy Mae LENSCH (likely Wendish)

4.      Anna, HALBASCH, 16, born 1840, Drehnow

5.      Maria, (Harnagel) HALBASCH, 14, born 25 Jul 1842, Drehnow

6.      Christina (Rhodes) HALBASCH, 2,  born 1854, in Drehnow

After moving to FRANKLIN, LEE COUNTY, IOWA, the next 2 boys were born:

7.      Fred HALBASCH, 1857, born in Franklin, Lee County, Iowa

8.      Oscar HALBASCH is born 1858 in Franklin, Lee county Iowa

They are found in the 1860 US Federal Census in WEST POINT, LEE COUNTY, IOWA. The HARNAGEL’S, who Maria later marries, lived next door. This name is found in PEITZ Church books, and on their ship arriving in NYC.

It is believed, both Anna SCHENATZK  HALBASCH & son Oscar die by 1860.  By the 1880 census the family is living next door to their cousins, the William HALBASCH family, also of DREHNOW, who immigrate in 1873. Martin apparently remarries and his wife later shows as Katherine LAURISCKE, who also possibly Wendish.
