BACHANZ

1 . MARTIN BACHANZ , 15, laborer,  of DREHNOW, BRANDENBURG, GERMANY

2. FRIEDERICH SCHIMLICK, 24, laborer of DREHNOW, BRANDENBURG, GERMANY

Martin and Friederich immigrated from Hamburg, Germany, leaving on 16th May and arriving in the port of New York, on 6 Jun 1887, on the ship “Polynesia.” In the indexes, “Germans to America” and also Castle Garden website, the name is shown as “Marton Bachany” and “Fried Schmedeck,” but a viewing of the actual Hamburg roster shows Martin Bachanz and Fried. Schmileck, from “DREHNAU, PRUSSIA

Martin settled SHEBOYGAN COUNTY, WI.  He married CLARA  TUTTSCHEL in 1896 in SAINT CROIX, SHEBOYGAN COUTNY, where they had  four children

1.     August M BACHANZ, born 2 Aug 1897; married Edna Runge, 8 Apr 1923.

2.     Carl Truschel BACHANZ, born 3 Sep 1900, married Naomi Collins, 15 Jun 1932

3.     Nelda BACHANZ, born  14 Feb 1906, single teacher

4.     Lillie BACHANZ, born 29 Aug 1910, never married.

In the 1910 census, the neighbors listed next door may very well be Wendisch, They are: William GRAEF, 44. Elzabeth 39, Henry 21, daughter Cara? 17 and Victor 4.

In the 1920 neighbors Adolph NEUMANN, 39, Fireman and wife Caroline 40, daughter Ruth 2 mo., again look suspiciously Wendisch.

This Friederich SCHIMLICK has not yet been found in the US, though the similarly spelled, SCHMELLICK’s immigrated to FORT MADISON in 1868 and then moved onto STATE CENTER, IA.

This family is believed to be directly related to the HALBASCH family that immigrated to FORT MADISON, IOWA in 1873 and who was also from DREHNOW.
