1863

SCHLODDER,

BARTELL-RIESE

1)      Matthes SCHLODDER, 62, farmer, of DRACHHAUSEN.

Matthes SCHLODDER was a bachelor, who fathered an illegitimate child. The child, Martin BARTELL, was born on 15 November, 1833. The mother was listed as Maria BARTELL. Later in life, son Martin takes the name of RIESE.

Matthes SCHLODDER immigrated to Canada with this child. Brandenburg Immigration records show them both leaving in 1863 for North America. However, Matthes SCHLODDER does not file with son Martin RIESE, as would have been the custom if they traveled together. Martin RIESE does file with his wife Anna SCHMELLICK, their children, and his biological mother Maria BARTELL (her name shows that she is also known by the name of RIESE).

Matthes SCHLODDER has been found documented in five places, 1) his son’s birth, 2) Paper’s leaving Drachhausen in 1863, 3) Canadian Census, 1871, in Renfrew North District, Wilberforce sub-district, 4) possibly listed as Martin REESE,  “Grandfather,” on the 1880 Iowa Fed Census, living with his son (though birth year is 8 years older)  and 5) Burial in the Clemons Cemetery, Minerva Township, Marshall County Iowa, 14 October, 1889. It is not known if he went to Canada with the rest of the family, or when he came to Iowa. He does end up buried near the RIESE home in IOWA, but not in the same cemetery as the rest of the family. Daniel Gehrling’s research indicates that Matthew SCHLODDER may have married           Marie BARTELL AKA RIESE  in Canada between 1863 and 1871.  His life remains a mystery.

When his child marries, 26 Nov 1856, the child’s name is recorded as: Martin RIESE, born BARTELL.  He is noted to be the son of Maria BARTELL, but it is his “Guardian” who has given permission for him to marry. The guardian’s name is not given. This certainly implies he was not raised by his biological father, Matthes SCHLODDER, who is not mentioned.

Family records in this country, indicate that Martin RIESE (born 1833) was the child of Christian RIESE, (b. 1802, Drachhausen; d. 1880 in Minerva TWSP, Marshall Co, IOWA) and Anna BUBNER-GOSCHMANN (b. 27 Jun 1811, Drachhausen; d. 1870, Drachhausen).

This is absolutely incorrect, but the fact that it was recorded as such in US sources, implies that these might have been the unnamed “guardians.”  Anna BUBNER GOSCHMANN was previously married to Christian BARTELL, so she may have been related by marriage to the mother Maria BARTELL. This made the RIESE family a likely candidate to assist, if Maria BARTELL needed assistance as a single parent.  Anna had a son with first husband, Christian BARTELL, who was another Martin BARTELL, born 22 Feb 1839, who immigrated to FORT MADISON, IA in 1883.
