1882

SCHERGEN or

JERGEN

1)   Martin SCHERGEN, 24, farm laborer

The illegitimate child of Anna JERGEN or SCHERGEN, Martin was born 5 Nov 1858, in DRACHHAUSEN. His mother, Anna, married Christian SCHIEMENZ, of Peitz,  27 Jan 1861. They had Wilhem SCHIEMENZ in 1861, and immigrated to CANADA in 1863.

Martin SCHERGEN was only 4. He never took his step father’s name; though he was listed as Martin SCHIEMENZ / SCHERGEN, in the immigration papers filed in Cottbus, Brandenberg, before they left for CANADA.

Martin immigrated to the USA, having grown up in  CANADA, in 1882, at 24 years of age. He apparently never married; but was naturalized as a US citizen. He lived until at least 51 years of age.

On 12 Feb 1888, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, in STATE CENTER, IOWA, Martin SCHERGUN was named as the Godfather of William Walter MUSCHICK, who had been born to Christian MUSCHICK and Anna KONZAK, both from DRACHHAUSEN. Christian was a carpenter, and possibly Martin SCHERGUN was working for him.

According to the census; he lived with the Christian SCHMELLICK family in SHERMAN TOWNSHIP, STORY  COUNTY, IOWA; from at least 1900-1910, where he is listed as a farm laborer.
