RUHL

1) Matthes RUHL, 37, new immigrant.

Found in St Paul’s Lutheran Church Books, STATE CENTER, IOWA is the death of Matthes RUHL, on 29 June 1903. The entry states he was born in DRACHHAUSEN in1866. He is listed as a “new Wend.”

In his birth, as recorded in the DRACHHAUSEN Church books, on 29 July 1866, he is the 5th child of Martin RUHL III and Christiane LEHMANN. He is 37 at the time of his death. Though relatively young at the time of his death, no reason is given.  He was likely single, records in Drachhausen do not show a marriage or children. None of his siblings came to America.

RUHL had cousins who had married into the KULLOWATZ, MARKUSCH and SCHLODDER families in DRACHHAUSEN, so there were ample opportunities for him to hear about families in the USA.

Perhaps he was working for the Martin MUSCHICK family. His maternal grandmother was in the BULKOW family, and Martin MUSCHICK Jr. of St. Anthony, Iowa, was married to Maria BULKOW.  Matthes RUHL was a 3rd cousin to Maria BULKOW MUSCHICK, who had immigrated about 19 years earlier.  Martin MUSCHICK and Maria BULKOW were active in St. Paul’s Lutheran Church.
