KULLOWATZ

1)   Matthes KULLOWATZ, b. 1 Apr 1865, carpenter, of DRACHHAUSEN

 

Matthes, born 1 Apr 1885, in DRACHHAUSEN, BRANDENBURG, GERMANY, was an amazing 6'6” and worked in the Guards for the Kaiser, doing carpentry on pullman cars for the railroad.

 

He arrived in the US, in NYC, 16 Mar 1889, on the S.S. Aller, from Bremen, which was an interim ship, with both smoke stacks and rigged to sail.  He was naturalized in Fort Madison, Lee County, 11 Jan 1890, at the age of 25.

 

2)   Hannah Emma BARTELL, b 1871, FORT MADISON, IA,

 

Matthes KULLOWATZ married Hannah BARTELL, a second generation Wend; the daughter of Martin BARTELL and Liese JURK, who had immigrated in 1868. Matthes and Hannah were married the day after Christmas, 1894, at St. John’s United Church of Christ, in FORT MADISON, IOWA.  The Marriage record, shows him to be a carpenter, age 30, son of Christian KULLOWATZ and Anna RUHL. Other RUHL’S lived in FORT MADISON.

 

They had 5 children, all born in FORT MADISON, IA:

3)   Margaret Lina KULLOWATZ, b 30 Jul 1895

4)   Martin Frederick KULLOWATZ, b 22 Jun 1897, married Myra Scott

5)   Edward Christian KULLOWATZ, b 10 Oct 1899

6)   Elisabeth Emma KULLOWATZ, b12 Apr 1902, married Dale Linn Edlen

7)   John Mathias KULLOWATZ, b 9 May 1905, d. WWI, Italy

 

Son Martin quit school in the 8th grade and joined his father in the construction business. He eventually moved on to MONTANA & then PORTLAND, OR.
