JURTH A.K.A YURTH

Carl JURTH, was born in DRACHHAUSEN 22 Sep 1849, the son of Gottlieb JURTH and Liese RINZA. He was known in the USA as Charles W. YURTH, an Americanization which spells the name like it sounds.

 

Carl’s first marriage, according to DRACHHAUSEN church books was to Maria TITZKA, b 2 Sep 1848 in SCHMOGROW. They married in BRIESSEN 15 Jun 1874, 30 miles southwest of DRACHHAUSEN. The wedding was likely reported by his parents to the church. They had two children prior to his going to MARSHALLTOWN in 1883, leaving the family behind.

 

Around 886, after receiving news of wife Maria and his son’s death, he returned to the DRACHHAUSEN area. He remained there for 3-4 years. During this time he marries the Widow Elisabeth “Lizzie” SCHMOGER from FEHROW. Lizzie had been previously married to Matthes TESCHA or TETSCHA. Lizzie was Carl’s sister-in-law, Maria TITZKA and Matthes TESCHA being siblings. The difference in spelling was the difference in the villages and how they recorded the names. This made Anna Maria the biological cousin to her brothers, Matthes and Fred, in their new family. They were all ˝ siblings to the later children.

 

The 1900 US Census shows their immigration as 1890, other family sources show it as 1889. They settle in FORT MADISON, LEE COUNTY, IOWA. Where they live near their friends from DRACHHAUSEN, the BUBNERS and GULLICK families.

  6. Anna JURTH, 2, possibly born in FEHROW, BRANDENBURG, GERMANY

In or near FORT MADISON, LEE COUNTY, IOWA they had 5 more children:

  4. Martin Gottlieb YURTH, 6 Apr 1898, who moved to OREGON
