HALBASCH

Anna HALBASCH, of  DRACHHAUSEN, filed Brandenberg Emmigration Papers, to leave Germany in 1857; 3 family members entered USA on 1 Aug 1857, on the "Marion" from Hamburg; their destination is “Madison.” Their parents were Hans “HUSCHMANN” nee HALBUSCH, and Maria CHAINA of DREHNOW. The HUSCHMANN name likely came from a farm their parents bought, but the children retained the original HALBASCH name.

1) Anna HALBASCH 40, single, b. 1817, before the Drachhausen Church books

2) Caroline HALBASCH, 29 single, b. 7 Dec 1828, Drachhausen, sister

3) Christian HALBASCH, 26 Laborer, b. 3 Jul 1831, brother

The 26 year old laborer, Christian HALBASCH  appears to return to DRACHHAUSEN; where he  marries Liese LOTTRA, 29 August, 1858 and proceeds to have 5 children, in DRACHHAUSEN.  He must have been in love when he left and missed Liese LOTTRA too much to stay in America without her. He married her 28 Aug 1858, this is only 11 months after he arrived in the US, he has returned to Germany and marries. There is no notation in his birth record that he ever went to America.

Caroline’s birth record shows she went to the USA in 1857. Caroline’s illegitimate child appears to be on the ship also; listed as one of the MUSCHICK children. It is not know why this might have been done, perhaps by accident, but he is listed this way both leaving Hamburg and arriving in New York. The MUSCHICK’S did not have a child this age.

4) Christian MUSCHICK, 3, b. 16 Nov 1854, believed to be HALBASCH

Caroline must have been pregnant on this voyage, because she has her 2nd child, John, in 1857, in LEE COUNTY, IA.  On 20 March 1858, in LEE COUNTY, IA., she married Martin GUTKE, a Wend also from DRACHHAUSEN and believed to be the father of her two illegitimate children. They had 5 more children, two of whom died in infancy.

Caroline and her older sister, Anna, married on the same day, 20 Mar 1858, about 8 months after their US arrival, in St John’s Evangelisches church in FORT MADISON, IOWA.  Anna was 40, and married John DOBLER. Neither she, nor any offspring, have been found in later records. DOBLERS in CLINTON,  IOWA may be related. Caroline married Wend Martin GUTKE and raised her original 2 children and had 5 more; two daughters died in infancy. (see 1857 GUTKE).
