BARTEL

On the Ship S.S. Aller, arriving New York City, 16 Mar 1889, the BARTEL family returns from what appears to be a vacation back to DRACHHAUSEN, 21 year after their 1868 immigration.  An example of chain migration of the Iowa Wends, on this ship are five who are US citizens:

1)      Martin BARTEL, 50, born 22 Feb 1839 in DRACHHAUSEN, farmer, USA

2)      Elisabeth BARTEL, 45, born 27 Jul 1845 in DRACHHASEN, as Liese JURK, wife

3)      Anna BARTEL, 17, born in FORT MADISON, IOWA, abt 1871, Hannah Emma

4)      Lina BARTEL, 12, born in FORT MADISON, IOWA Amalia Caroline, b 26 Jul 1874

5)      Emma BARTEL, 11, born in FORT MADISON, IOWA, Emma Marie, b 13 Sep 1877.

They return with the 5 member, Carl JURTH family, who may be related to the other Carl JURTH family,  and 5 young men between the ages of 24 and 32.

It is not known if they had a similar arrangement to those who returned with Martin RIESE to the STATE CENTER area, to work for Martin BARTEL. These young men:

1)      William KRAUTZ, 27, workman, later marries Wend Marie Ann MUSCHICK

2)      Matthes KULLOWATZ, 25, workman, later marries 2nd generation Wend, Hannah Emma BARTEL

3)      Martin SCHERGUN, 25, workman, b. 30 Mar 1859, illegitimate son of Caroline SCHERGEN, believed to be working for Chris SCHMELLICK, Sherman township, Story County Iowa, in 1900 Fed. Census and 1905 Iowa census,

4)      Martin POST, 32, workman, living in Lee County, 1900 census

5)      Christian SCHULTZE, 24, workman

Apparently they form binding friendships. Matthes KULLOWATZ marries Hanna Emma BARTEL, 5 years later, on 26 Dec 1894. This may have been a case of marrying the boss’s daughter. The others make various appearances in the records of St. John’s Evangelisches Church, in FORT MADISON, IOWA, including as godparents to the children born of the KULLOWATZ/BARTEL union.
